Key Points (intro in chapter 3 Stallings):

* All of the forms of information (voice, data, image, video) can be represented by electromagnetic signals.

* Any electromagnetic signal, analog or digital, is made up of a number of constituent frequencies. Key parameter is bandwidth

* A major problem in designing a communication facility is transmission impairment (attenuation, distortion, delay and noise)

* The designer of a communication facility must deal with four factors: bandwidth of the signal, data rate, amount of noise or other impairments and level of error rate.

The main reference used for this lecture is:

W. Stalling, Data and Computer Communications, Prentice Hall, 8th edition.

We use also the power point presentations written by Lawrie Brown.
